This is one of those guitars we dream about seeing walk into the shop. A portal to when the electric guitar was the new frontier in music and instrument companies were looking to innovate and create the new standard. Debuting in 1961, this guitar was released as the new Les Paul model after almost a decade of the original single cut examples we know and love. It lost its Les Paul title a couple years later and eventually became the SG. This single family owned guitar is an incredible example of that model and has a couple of features that make it a unique piece unto itself with its factory "Stinger" finish on the back of the headstock as well as a factory out of phase pickup. This is a one of one.
This guitar has been dated to early 1961 due to its serial number of 2170, the inclusion of original brown/pink Lifton hardshell case, and original Centralab Potentiometers dating to the 43rd week of 1960.
The guitar’s cherry finish appears to be original and shows signs of typical deterioration with lacquer checking, small dents, surface scratches, and mild sun-fading of the original color. This particular model has a factory applied head stock “stinger” with no evidence of any breakage concealed on or near the headstock. There is some discoloration of the inlays around the edge.
The truss rod cover, control knobs, bridge, pickup cover, pickup rings, pick guard, and vibrola all look to be original and in proper functioning order. The original double-ring/single line Deluxe Kluson tuners are in great shape and have the correct patent number stamp inside the tuner casing.
Wiring harness looks original and from factory condition. The three way switch retains its original switch tip. All potentiometers are original Centralab 500k Pots dated to the 43 week of 1960.
Pickups are original PAFs and both show the Patent Applied For sticker on the base plate. The neck pickup is magnetically out of phase, which our luthier deemed to be under his best knowledge, a factory error and original none the less. Bridge pickup reads 8.13k and Neck reads 7.56k
